Tesla isn’t alone in adjusting its palette, and the changes are worldwide.

Tesla has narrowed its selection of paint colours on offer from seven to five, in an attempt to streamline manufacturing processes.

Previously offered as a $2100 option, Obsidian Black Metallic and Silver Metallic will now cost $2800 in Australia and be considered “off-menu, limited edition” colours. The decision is a global one, not just for our market.

“In order to streamline manufacturing, we will be reducing our car paint ordering options from seven to five colours on Thursday,” the company said in a customer email.

Along with the narrower paint selection, Tesla is ending unlimited free Supercharging for its best referrers of new owners. Instead, referral program champions will get 150 credits for the fast-charge service.

“We occasionally adjust pricing and available options to best reflect the value of our products and to streamline our manufacturing operations. The adjustments made today are the latest example of that,” a Tesla spokesperson said of the change.

Offering a limited range of options or a diminished colour palette is nothing new, and it’s certainly not limited to Tesla.

Volkswagen, for example, has a veritable smorgasbord of exciting hues overseas, but the only way to have a bright green Golf R is through (expensive) special order. Whereas that’s limited to Australia, fiddling with international configurators reveals luxury brands have a knack for limiting buyers to a raft of dour finishes.
