Carbon and aluminium combine for a strong, light structure from Gordon Murray.
Gordon Murray Design (GMD) has unveiled the latest iteration of its iStream chassis, dubbed Superlight.
The system promises to reduce “vehicle body weight by up to 50 per cent” compared to conventional construction methods, thanks to the combination of a high-strength aluminium frame and carbon-fibre composite panels.
GMD also says it’s fully modular system, with a central platform that can be adapted to everything from compact hatchbacks to full-size SUVs. Because the body panels are made of honeycomb recycled carbon instead of stamped metal, the process is more environmentally friendly than conventional production processes.
“The new iStream Superlight approach to vehicle manufacturing is a paradigm-shifting innovation for the global automotive industry. It is a breakthrough that will deliver the lightest chassis technology for decades to come,” Gordon Murray, founder of GMD, said.
“The Gordon Murray Design team has created a unique, adaptable and cost-effective way for manufacturers around the world to dramatically improve vehicle performance and efficiency.”
Along with the Superlight chassis, the team at Gordon Murray Design has announced a new iStream lightweight seat. Using the same materials and techniques as the chassis, they’re designed to be around 30 per cent lighter than a standard automotive seat, and could theoretically be used in planes, trains and automobiles.
They’re also four-way adjustable, and can be manufactured to fold flat for practicality-focused hatchbacks.
Both iStream chassis and lightweight seats will be on show at the Low Carbon Vehicle show in Millbrook, UK.
