2012-2018 model-year vehicles could have a faulty component which causes the engine to stall.

Ford has issued a recall for over 1.4 million examples of the Focus in North America over a stalling issue,

The fault revolves around the canister purge valve, which could get stuck in an open position – if this happens, an “excessive vacuum in the fuel system could cause deformation of the vehicle’s plastic fuel tank”.

According to the Blue Oval, the condition can cause the engine malfunction light to illuminate in the instrument cluster, or the fuel gauge to show fluctuating or inaccurate fuel levels. Ford says the fault can lead to an engine stall while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of an accident.

Focus models affected by this recall were produced between 2012 and 2018 at the company’s Michigan Assembly Plant in the US, fitted with the 2.0-litre ‘GDI’ and 2.0-litre ‘GTDI’ engines.

GDI variants produced before 13 April 2017 are affected, while recalled GTDI models were built prior to 2 February 2018.

There’s a total of 1,463,389 units affected in North America – 1,282,596 in the United States, 136,272 in Canada, and 44,521 in Mexico.

Ford’s local division has confirmed there is no local impact for this recall, as it is specific to models made at the Michigan facility.
