Wondering how Darren performs car paint chip repair? Despite the many videos or pictures you have seen from paint chip repair kits or companies, car paint chip repair and scratch removal is not as simple or easy as many would have you think.
At least half the battle is understanding the limitations of touch-up paint for cars and being able to manage your customer expectations.
This video was cut from a longer video due to the many questions Darren gets about his car paint touch-up kit. In this case it is Applied Colors. And “no”, Darren does not have a firm opinion as to the best car paint touch-up kit out there. Not if you are going to be doing this as an add on service for your detail business.
If you are a DIYer and looking to fix or repair a chip or multiple chips in your car paint, you can see his link here for his recommendations.

WHY DIDN'T YOU TAKE PAINT COLOR OFF OF VIN #. SILVER, OF ALL COLORS, IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MATCH BECAUSE OF METALIC FADING AFTER VERY SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. THEN YOU TRY TO MANUALLY MATCH COLOR FROM 250 COLORS ?? VERY UNPROFESIONAL

I can't imagine why anyone would actually pay for this result.

Darrin, seems like you did it out of order… clean, paint, sand, polish… if you follow that order I think you'll find it matches way better…

I am sorry but this is a quick fix to a paint chip. I would not hire you to do this kind of repair. To do it correctly you need to get the correct color code of the automobile and once the area is cleaned and prepped, if it goes down to bare metal then use a dab of primer paint then you have to build up the paint by using a dab method with a tooth pick. Your paint sample method would be used to match a color on an older car where their is no color codes available. I did that method with an old 1960's Honda Motorcycle I owned. The auto paint store did not have any color codes for the old motorcycles. Getting back to the repair, you can use a heat gun to make the drying process faster and the area should be wet sanded with 2000-3000 paper after each application. I warp the sandpaper around a wet Scotch Brite Sponge. once I am happy with the final build up I would add some dabs of clear coat, wet sand again, use Mequiars M105 and then HD speed with a Harbor Freight DA to fix the sanding marks. It takes time to do it correctly. I am just a home owner and not a detailer but this method has worked great for me and this is how I would do the repair, again if your are a detailer the client would have to know the time involved if this was your business.

That’s like a 2 maybe 3 out of 10. Y’all should try the langka blob remover for small scratches and chips. It allows you to just blob the paint on let it dry for a day then smooth the blob level with the paint. It also will not remove any of your OEM paint only the touch up paint will dissolve.

    Good Lord… I wouldn’t let you touch up my Puppy’s Cage !!!!!
