2019 Lexus GX 460

The 2019 GX 460 is one of Lexus’ older models and one of the dwindling number of truck-based SUVs on the market. Cars.com reviewer Joe Wiesenfelder took on the task of finding out if the GX 460 still holds its own in the modern SUV market, including on a lengthy trip from Chicago to Detroit and back.

What did Wiesenfelder find out during his time with the big — but not biggest — Lexus SUV? For starters, the GX is a series of trade-offs. Being truck-based has its advantages, like towing capacity and off-road capability, but disadvantages like poorer on-road ride quality and manners. The most interesting compromise, however, has to do with the GX’s age.

“Add this to my growing list of backhanded compliments: The GX is old enough that its multimedia system isn’t maddening,” Wiesenfelder gratefully writes. “Almost all Lexuses have a display in their dashboard controlled by Remote Touch Interface: a mouselike device or touchpad on the center console. Despite their years of revisions, we just don’t like it, and we’re not alone. The GX, however, has a simple touchscreen and — again, because it’s older — doesn’t incorporate the controls for too many essential features.”

As a special treat to our video viewers, reviewer Aaron Bragman got behind the wheel of a $420,000 Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV to show what makes it so special and worth so much money, as well as what might make some viewers question spending more than the price of a house on a single vehicle. The Cullinan video joins the list at No. 2 this week, behind the video of our first drive of the updated BMW 3 Series. Our first look at the 2019 Ram 1500’s trick Multifunction Tailgate is third, followed by our trip to a drag strip in a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody and then a first look at Toyota’s lightly updated 2020 Tundra full-size pickup.
