2018 is officially over. It’s time for sunshine and (a sometimes rose-tinted) reflection on the year gone by. Here at CarAdvice, we’re taking the chance to look back at some of the most interesting, exciting and downright strange stories published this year.

It was only when I sat down to begin writing this rant that I realised the immense pettiness of it… but, you know what, I’m running with it. Let’s start 2018 with a big bloody whinge.Here it is. Nothing grinds my gears more in a new car than the absence of a little feature that ought to be standard by now.

4. 2018 Kia Stinger 330Si v Holden Commodore VXR comparison (617 comments)

This Holden Commodore is no longer built in Australia, it’s now built in Germany, nor is the Commodore rear-wheel drive, it’s now all-wheel drive. Along the way it has also lost two cylinders, but gained a stack of standard equipment.

The other big difference in this test is that the Kia Stinger is ours. We bought this one late last year for full price and we’ve stuck almost 11,000km on the clock since taking delivery.

Why does any of that matter? Well, some of you thought that maybe the Stinger we tested had a special Korean tune that helped it perform.

3. 2018 Volkswagen Polo pricing and specs (622 comments)

Australian pricing and specifications for the 2018 Volkswagen Polo range have been revealed this week, with the all-new light hatch to kick off at $17,990 before on-road costs when it arrives in showrooms next month.

The sixth-generation of Volkswagen’s light car comes in at just $800 more than the vehicle it replaces, despite being larger in every dimension, more powerful and featuring more equipment.

At launch, three trim levels will be available – Trendline, Comfortline and Launch Edition – all featuring a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol engine mated to either a five-/six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG.

2. VFACTS: March 2018 new vehicle sales (684 comments

Australia’s new vehicle sales in March hit a record high of 106,988 units, according to company-provided figures collated by industry peak body, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI).

This increase of 4.4 per cent over March 2017 took quarter-one sales to 291,538, up 1.5 per cent over last year’s record. March is always a high-volume month on the calendar.

The push for ceaseless growth within Australia’s intensely crowded and fragmented market continues unabated. Consider this: nine of the past 11 months have produced all-time record tallies.
