New van is ‘expected from 2020’, and will feature smoother styling and a design influenced by the brand’s latest passenger car models.

The Renault Kangoo ZE Concept was unveiled overnight, and is said to preview the company’s next-generation small van.

Renault is especially keen to point out the concept’s body is “designed like that of a passenger car”, and features prominent wheel arches, sculpted flanks and a rounded shoulder line.

The concept looks pretty close to being production ready. We expect the showroom model will feature smaller wheels, proper door handles and wing mirrors, less fancy headlamps and tail-lights, and a more conventional grille insert.

Also unlikely to survive the transition to production is the lighting strip running along the sides and around the back of the vehicle. The light strip probably indicates where the track for the sliding rear doors will be located, though.

Given the vehicle’s ZE designation, the concept has a pure electric drivetrain, but Renault has not provided any details about it.

The current Kangoo ZE has a 44kW/226Nm motor paired with a 33kWh lithium-ion battery giving a maximum driving range of 270 kilometres. Progress is sedate with a 0-100km/h time of 22.4 seconds and a top speed of 130km/h.
