Is this a replacement for the 2008 or a new model?
An engineering and development mule for new Peugeot crossover has been spied undergoing testing in Europe.
The mule is fitted a modified body borrowed from the current Peugeot 208. Thanks to its massive wheel arch extensions we know the new car will be significantly wider than 1739mm hatch.
This vehicle also features stretched rear quarter panels with wheels set further back than normal, meaning its wheelbase is over 2538mm long, and overall length should be comfortably over the four-metre mark.
It could be a replacement for the 2008, as the current car is based on the 208 and roughly the dimensions indicated above. The current-generation 2008 made its debut in 2013.
The mule could possibly be a new model slotting underneath the 2008. If that’s the case, the 1008 badge makes a lot intuitive sense.
Given the car’s size, a selection of three- and four-cylinder petrol engines, and one or two diesel offerings, seem to be likely.
With cost and packaging likely to trump any desire to provide true off-road ability, the new car will probably be front-wheel drive only.
