Reuss led Holden during a brief spell in 2008 and 2009
Mark Reuss, who was once the managing director of Holden, has been appointed as the president of General Motors, effectively immediately.
He replaces Dan Ammann, who has been president since 2014. Ammann has stepped down to take control of Cruise, the company’s autonomous driving division.
Although he now occupies the president’s chair, Reuss will keep his existing roles as the head of the Global Product Group, Global Quality and Cadillac.
Born and raised in Detroit, Reuss began working at GM in 1990 as a body engineer at the Flint factory after graduating from university with degrees in mechanical engineering and business administration.
During his career with the General he helped to engineer well received vehicles, such as the Oldsmobile Aurora and Buick Riviera, but was also the vehicle line executive tasked with bringing the Pontiac Aztek, possibly one of the ugliest cars of all time, into production.
He took the reins of Holden in February 2008. In the second half of 2009 he was promoted to run GM’s North American arm, as well as become the company’s global engineering boss.
Thanks to his urging, the Holden Commodore was sold in North America as the Chevrolet SS.
In 2013 Reuss was elevated to the position of global director of product development, purchasing and supply chain.
While Reuss’ career at GM spans almost 29 years, his connection to the company goes back further. His father, Lloyd E. Reuss, was GM’s president between 1990 to 1992.
