Jeep Compass PHEV

Jeep brought its Renegade and Compass models to the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show with a technological twist: Both models are plug-in hybrids. There’s no official word on when these will go on sale in Europe, but it seems highly likely that both hybrids will cross the Atlantic to the U.S. soon after.

The rechargeable battery packs in both will be good for roughly 31 miles of electric-only range and speeds of around 80 mph. Power figures aren’t exact, but Jeep places them in the “190 to 240” horsepower range for both the Renegade and the Compass; the Compass is still awaiting official confirmation, however, and will likely have a horsepower figure closer to 240 than the Renegade.

Those figures would be significant improvements for both SUVs — and both sorely needed. The Renegade is perhaps less poky than the Compass, but both were lacking in the power department. The extra — and immediate — torque from the electric motor will be beneficial, as well, and Jeep claims both will reach 62 mph in “approximately seven seconds.”

Both the Compass and Renegade PHEVs will use an electric all-wheel-drive system called eAWD. The electric motor, rather than a prop shaft, powers the rear wheels, which allows for independent torque control. Jeep says this setup will give both SUVs even better off-road capabilities thanks to the increased torque and the more precise application of the torque provided by the electric motors.

As with most hybrids, the Renegade and Compass PHEVs will have hybrid-specific displays as part of their infotainment systems to inform drivers of hybrid-specific information and performance.

More From Cars.com:

No on-sale date or pricing is available yet for either SUV, but in a best-case scenario, the hybrid powertrain will be available on all or most trim levels for a modest increase in price. For reference, the 2019 Jeep Renegade Sport with four-wheel drive starts at $25,020, while a four-wheel-drive 2019 Compass Sport starts at $24,840; both prices include a $1,495 destination fee.
