Petrol-electric station wagon scheduled for launch during 2019, previews updated model.
Ford Europe has confirmed it will offer a petrol-electric Mondeo Hybrid estate in Europe next year, forming part of an “enhanced range” of hybrid vehicles headed for the region in 2019.
Developed “exclusively for Europe”, it’s the first time the Blue Oval has offered its hybrid mid-sizer in wagon form. Currently, the Mondeo Hybrid pairs a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine and a generator with a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack.
Combined power output is rated at 187PS (138kW), with drive sent to the front wheels via a continuously-variable transmission.
Ford says the current Mondeo Hybrid’s regenerative braking system can recuperate up to 90 per cent of the energy normally lost during deceleration to replenish the battery’s charge.
The company has confirmed the hybrid wagon will be built alongside the wider line-up at its Valencia production facility in Spain, and will arrive in UK dealers during the northern hemisphere spring in 2019.
While not explicitly stated in the announcement, we believe the Mondeo Hybrid estate will form part of the facelifted range due to be revealed in the coming months.
Speaking with industry journal Automotive News last month, Ford said: “We have upgrades coming for Mondeo later this year, which will see new powertrains as well as exterior and interior updates as well as enhancements to the Mondeo Hybrid range”.
The mid-life refresh should include minor exterior and interior design revisions, along with the availability of the company’s latest and greatest driver assistance and active safety features.
It’s unclear exactly when these updates will make it to Australian showrooms, though the company’s local division has already confirmed the Mondeo “will be on sale for the foreseeable future” following speculation the long-running nameplate could be dropped globally as Ford shifts its Focus to the burgeoning SUV segment.
