Vehicles Affected: Approximately 3,500 model-year 2018 BMW 330e plug-in hybrid sedans, i3 electric hatchbacks, X5 xDrive40e SUVs; model-year 2018 Mini Cooper Countryman SE All4 plug-in hybrid hatchbacks; model-year 2019 BMW i8 electric coupe and roadsters; and model-year 2018-19 BMW 530e and 740Le hybrid sedans

The Problem: Capacitors within the TurboCord portable chargers may fail, possibly resulting in a shock hazard or fire and increasing the risk of injury or death.

The Fix: Dealers will inspect the charging cable and replace it, if necessary, for free.

What Owners Should Do: Mini manufacturer BMW will begin notifying owners Nov. 12. Owners can call Mini at 866-825-1525, BMW at 800-525-7417, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
