Production version of ID. Crozz concept spotted again during development testing, ahead of a full reveal next year.

The production version of the Volkswagen ID. Crozz has been snapped again this week, with reports suggesting it will bear the ID.4X name when it goes on sale globally late in 2020 or early in 2021.

First spotted nearly a month ago, the Volkswagen ID.4X is an all-electric crossover that’s roughly between the Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace in terms of physical dimensions, based on the German brand’s scalable MEB architecture for electric vehicles.

It’s believed the ID.4X will develop around 302hp (225kW) from its dual-motor electric powertrain – facilitating all-wheel drive – while being capable of around 500 kilometres per charge. Using a 150kW fast charger, the ID.4X should be able to replenish 80 per cent of its battery capacity in around 30 minutes.

Compared to the concept that previewed it, the ID.4X will be a little more conventional in form, with a higher roofline and regular doors at the rear, compared to the more coupe-like look of the design study.

Expect various design cues from the ID.3 to feature, too, including the closed grille treatment up front and slim LED tail-lights at the rear that extend into the centre of the tailgate. It looks like the light units at the rear might even be joined by a strip through the centre, like the new T-Cross baby crossover.

A range of semi-autonomous driver assists should also be available, allowing for Level 2 or Level 3 autonomous driving capability. The ID.4X is expected to offer a digital-heavy cabin layout with massive displays and online-based infotainment functionality.

In terms of launch timing, the ID.4X won’t make its debut until sometime next year, perhaps as early as the Geneva motor show in March, following the ID.3’s production debut at the Frankfurt motor show next month.

European sales should kick off before the end of 2020, with deliveries rolling out across the globe from 2021.
