Despite the ever-increasing popularity of crossovers, BMW will be making a new generation of its small people mover.
The second-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has been spied during pre-production testing.
In terms of design, the 2 Series Active Tourer will again feature a tall body, a steeply angled bonnet, and raked-back front windscreen.
In an interesting departure from BMW norms, the Active Tourer will have flagpole-style wing mirrors and looks as though it will also have old-school lift-up door handles.
Up front the new Active Tourer will have fused-together kidney grilles that are large and wide, but thankfully they’re nothing like the units fitted to the Concept 4 coupe at the Frankfurt motor show.
For its second generation, the small people mover will use the latest version of the front- and all-wheel drive UKL platform as seen on latest 1 Series hatch.
Rumours suggest the long wheelbase 2 Series Gran Tourer will not be renewed. As such, we can expect the new Active Tourer to grow, and probably fall somewhere between today’s 4342mm long model and the 4556mm Gran Tourer.
Under the bonnet the new Active Tourer will likely be powered by a selection of turbocharged three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines from the 1 Series hatch.
A plug-in hybrid should join the party at some point, but the practical Active Tourer will likely miss out on the hotter engines being developed for the M-badged 1 Series models.
