Subaru updated the Legacy for 2020 by switching the mid-size sedan to a new global vehicle platform, which does wonders for the Legacy’s ride quality. Occupant comfort is enhanced by the comfortable front seats, and Subaru has given the Legacy a giant screen for its multimedia system that makes the sedan’s bland interior at least look modern. It also comes packed with standard safety tech and even more optional safety features. The Legacy is also still the only sedan in its class to offer standard all-wheel drive.

All of those things are good things and, combined with the Legacy’s sub-$24,000 starting price — which undercuts the big names in the class like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Nissan Altima — the Legacy is worthy of strong consideration from sedan shoppers.
But we do have some nits to pick with it, starting with the powertrain. The Legacy’s standard 2.5-liter boxer four-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic transmission do a poor job of delivering what little power there is, both from a stop and during passing or merging maneuvers. And while it’s doing that, it’s being noisy about it, with a frequent and rough-sounding drone.
