BMW released an all-new three-row vehicle, the X7, so it was only a matter of time until rival Mercedes-Benz updated its class entry. The 2020 GLS-Class was unveiled in April at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, and when the redesigned large ‘ute goes on sale at the end of the year, it’ll start at $76,195 for the GLS450, up over model-year 2019’s $71,145 base price (all prices include destination).

For 2020, the GLS will be available in six- and seven-passenger configurations, and there’s an extra 3.4 additional inches of legroom with the second row slid all the way back. Other new interior features include the new Mercedes-Benz User Experience multimedia system, anchored by a pair of standard 12.3-inch screens that sit high on the dash alongside each other to give the appearance of one large widescreen.

The redesigned model also gets some new engines: The GLS450 features a 362-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder that makes 369 pounds-feet of torque; the GLS580 ups that with a 483-hp, twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 making 516 pounds-feet of torque. Both vehicles have a standard nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

The 2020 GLE is priced competitively against the BMW X7, which starts at $74,895 in xDrive40i trim. Mercedes-Benz said the new GLS will go on sale at the end of 2019; pricing for the top GLS580 trim will be announced closer to its on-sale date.
