Holden’s crucial mid-sized SUV gets a bold new look, but will it be enough to drag the Equinox out of sales purgatory?
The new-look 2020 Holden Equinox looks to have surfaced early, thanks to what has been reported as a leak in the Chinese press – shown here in its Chevrolet-badged form.
As expected, thanks to spy photos published by CarAdvice in March last year, Holden parent General Motors has worked to correct the Equinox’s derided dowdy styling in this makeover.
These images, published by CarScoops, confirms styling at both ends is revised for the new model year, with the front end getting an entirely new look that sees the familiar ‘twin port’ Chevrolet grille given a more streamlined look.
New headlights are bisected by extensions of the grille’s chrome garnish, with new LED driving lights and daytime running lights integrated above and below the blade.
At the rear, the tail lights pick up a darkened and predominantly red lens design, along with a new LED signature.
An RS-badged version is again featured (likely exclusive to China, as with the previous version), with exterior differences apparently limited to a Camaro- and Blazer-like grille pattern, blacked-out trim, black badges and black wheels. Prominent quad exhaust tips can also be seen at the rear.
It remains to be seen if any significant changes have been made to the cabin.
The new-look Equinox line’s engine and transmission package is unlikely to see any major upgrades or changes beyond those made quietly towards the end of 2019.
Those changes meant goodbye to the entry-level LS and LS+ grades, along with the manual transmission and diesel engine options.
When will the updated Holden Equinox come to Australia?
For now, Holden has announced only that we can expect an updated Equinox in the first quarter of 2020. A spokesperson tonight would not confirm anything further about this new-look design.
Whether it will be this new look or a final specification change to the current model is still to be confirmed – although it is unlikely to continue building the old model much longer.
Holden had previously (in 2018) suspended production orders of the Equinox to allow existing stock to sell. The mid-sized SUV’s 2019 sales performance ended on 4562 registrations reported in VFACTS, compared to 4764 for the previous year. By comparison, Mazda sold 25,539 CX-5s, Toyota sold 24,260 RAV4s and Nissan sold 19,726 X-Trails.
The Equinox was also outsold by the Tucson (18,251), Outlander (17,514), Forester (15,096), CR-V (13,810), Sportage (13,645), and Tiguan (7747).
The once top-selling Holden will be hoping this refreshed Equinox can move numbers closer to its rivals, having recently confirmed its move to an almost exclusively SUV- and ute-focused range.
