The new vehicle is said to be Aston Martin’s fastest convertible yet, and features the same 5.2-litre twin-turbo V12 as the coupe.

Aston Martin has dropped the top on the DBS Superleggera, revealing the Volante ahead of customer deliveries later this year.

Let’s take it from the top. Aston Martin has squeezed eight layers of insulation and acoustic material into the car’s roof, which can be lowered in 14 seconds and raised in 16. It can be operated from inside the car, or using the key fob if you’re standing within two metres of the car.

Like the coupe, the Volante is powered by a twin-turbo, 5.2-litre V12 tuned to deliver 533kW of power and 900Nm of torque. All that torque is sent to the rear wheels through a carbon-fibre prop shaft and eight-speed automatic transmission.

The company claims the drop-top Superleggera is its fastest convertible ever, with a top speed of 340km/h. The convertible has a claimed 0-100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and can hit the 161km/h (100mph) mark in just 6.7 seconds.

By comparison the coupe is 0.2 seconds quicker to 100km/h, but has the same top speed. A number of driving modes are available, including GT, Sport, Sport Plus and Quiet Start.

As with other Aston Martin models, a high degree of customisation is possible with options including a carbon-fibre finish for the front windscreen frame and carbon-fibre interior trim.

Like the coupe, it represents an interesting blend of styling cues from the Vantage and DB11, with highlights wrought in carbon-fibre to justify the super light moniker.

The interior shares plenty with the DB11, too. Although it has its own skin, the infotainment system has its roots in Mercedes-Benz COMAND, right down to the rotary controller on the transmission tunnel.
