I can do remote diagnosis and remote observation of live data with my $10 bluetooth dongle. You don't need a special feature in the dongle to do this. This is an ability that any personal computer will have. The dongle sends info, including live data, to the software on my Windows 10 laptop. I find a large screen much easier to get information from than a tiny smart phone. I use a full-sized laptop but if I wanted to I could use a smartphone, a tablet, a small laptop, or a nearby desktop. The laptop, via my wireless access point, is part of my home local area network. All I have to do to see the info on my laptop remotely, anywhere on my own network, or anywhere in the world where there is internet service, is to set up a VPN connection to my home network. A VPN connection is an internet connection that allows a remote computer to function as if it were a node on a local area network, either a client-server or peer to peer network. If I provide information to the remote computer about which laptop computer in my LAN the dongle is reporting to, this local computer and the remote computer can share this info. With a fast internet service provider on both ends, the remote computer can see the live data as it is updated every second, or every 2 seconds, etcetera. At the remote computer one can see live data on its video display. One can also send data to the remote computer's printer.

My $10 dongle reads info only from the electronic control unit for the engine. It cannot get info about the ABS, the body's electrical system, the air conditioning, or the entertainment system, but it can get info about the alternator, voltage measured both at the battery and at the ecu. It gets live data about all the air-fuel info, intake manifold pressure, all the oxygen sensors, ignition timing advance, intake air temperature, fuel rail pressure, catalytic converter temperature, and more.

Most cars have screens in them. Why don't they post these error codes or message on the screen in the car? Why do you even need these scan tools to begin with?

If my PC has a problem, it will display it on the monitor. I don't have to plug in another screen in the printer port to get a code that I have to look up online. Me thinks its a way of car dealers of promoting their mechanicals and keeping the owner in the dark.
