Car Safety – Jacks & Jackstands – DIY auto mechanic gifts.
For most of the work, maintenance and repair on a car, truck or Jeep requires the vehicle to be lifted off the ground. You want to lift the car, truck or Jeep safely and you want to place strong jack-stands under the vehicle before you crawl under the vehicle to do any work. There is a big difference in the quality of tools and jacks for the DIY backyard mechanic. they may all look similar but the quality will readily show up in how long tools, jacks or jack-stands last and also how safe and secure (steady) the car or truck is when it is in the air. I have had lower quality floor jacks that bent, even though I was using them at well less than there advertised capacity. Car ramps are fast and very strong and stable. The main drawback with ramps to lift the car is that the suspension does not hang down and the wheels don’t turn, so the wheels and tires remain in the car. You can’t use ramps to do a brake job. I usually use a low profile, high-lift compact floor jack that is good quality. Things like this are good Christmas gift ideas for the DIY mechanic or car enthusiast. Unlike superficial gifts, a gift that a mechanic would want and use would actually be a real help for may years to come.

Those old 2 ton orange jack stands look more like today's 4  to 6 tons stands…they must have Re-rated the new light duty jack stands to hold more…lol
I double jack stand when i'm under the car…or two jacks and one jack stand…three points of safety…and if I leave the tires on….a fourth point of safety.

  2. Bourne Accident

When I was 17, I had a 1964 Pontiac Bonneville crash to the ground while I was getting a muffler out of the box.  It scared the shit out of me.  I only use truck jacks now, bolt and cotter pin style jack stands, and I throw a couple of spare tires under car just for good measure.

A bit off subject but the white iron table that you have the jack on is from a very expensive set. We had the set in the family since the late 60's. My sister now has it and had it powder coated and reupholstered. I saw a five piece set in a vintage store for a few thousand bucks.
