Neighbor lady took her car for an estimate to bring regular maintenance up to date. They included flushing and refilling the automatic transmission. She has a standard transmission. They said her serpentine belt was "frayed" and needed immediate replacement. I looked at the belt and it is just fine. They wanted to charge her $40 (plus $70 labor) to put iridium plugs in this Civic 4 cyclinder. I can get Autolite iridium plugs for less that $2 each with rebate, or NGK for $5 each. And, it will take all of ten minutes to replace the plugs. They said her struts and shocks needed to be replaced, but they are just fine. END RESULT: I'm going to bring everything up to date for cost of the parts and she'll cook me four nice Sunday dinners.

Mechanics like these, turned me in to a successful self taught DIY mechanic.
Thanks to YouTubers like Scotty and the Haynes manual.

Toyota dealership tried to lie to me when I brought the Camry in for the oil consumption recall. They claimed I stripped the bolt on the oil pan and that's why it's leaking. So I told the representative to show me. I walk in the bay the mechanic had this smug look. I said "where's the oil?" He changes up and says " oh it's not the bolt it's the oil pan." I'm like really? I don't see anything coming past or around the bolts and I changed the oil not too long ago. They wanted to charge me $450 to change an oil pan. I laughed in the man's face and told him I'm not a soccer mom please don't lie to me. He said ok (admitted his lie) took me in the office had the car taken in and I got a loaner car. Paid 0.00

    Dealers are straight faced thieves.

hey Scotty I have a 2014 Nissan Sentra with about 48000 miles. since Renault is their buddy partner would you recommend that I sell it as soon as I'm done paying it off? I was also told that if I change the cvt oil once a year it would help it, any advice would help out lots.

Had the same problem on a Accord from the 90’s. 1 dealer tried to charge me full price, like $600, for timing belt and there was recall on Honda engine. Next dealer asked if I’d mind paying for the part of timing belt.

As far as toyotas go with the maintenace light. It turns on every 5,000 miles.

Every car owner man or woman must learn the basics of car maintenance… It will save you money and having the satisfaction of doing it yourself . Of course there are things that are advance and leave it to the professionals. But car makers are making it harder to DIY like the sealed transmissions in the last 15 yrs or so.. But i would admit i need to experience how to remove the tranny pan and change the filter.. I did try once and after unscrewing all of the screws the pan was still stuck tight .. I had no idea what trick to use so i just abandon and rescrewed it back ….

I went to AAMCO transmission nearby i asked what s the trick and the guy said just use a razor blade slowly work on the sides . Then use a pry bar or fllat screw driver to slowly detach the pan from the engine block. And some even use a rubber mallet impacting the edge until theres transmission oozing out.. This is something i m planning to do in the future…
